Emotionally, loss and grief took hold inside many in our communities as we pondered our own extinction, even as we challenged ourselves to find new ways to relate to ourselves and one another. This was especially pronounced for many individuals in the Queer community, who experienced additional feelings of uncertainty on top of their everyday oppression. Some were forced to quarantine with people in their lives who made them feel unsafe, while others managed to foster new relationships in rebellion against the constant uneasiness of the circumstances. This exhibition invites us to consider how these times have profoundly altered how we cared for one another and ourselves, as well as how we frame and think about love itself. This age range is significant as it reflects a period of "primeness" often associated with patriarchal ideals of age, health, and stability. By engaging with young people, we not only cultivate a vibrant dialogue but also recognize the invaluable contributions of our elders. Through collaboration and exploration, we develop a language that acknowledges the wisdom of our predecessors while embracing the energy and innovation of youth. It is essential to bridge the generational gap and foster mutual understanding between different age groups. My aim is to provide young artists with a platform to learn from the wisdom of our elders and to explore new territories of creativity. Together, we can honor the legacy of those who came before us while charting a course for the future that is inclusive, diverse, and deeply rooted in our collective experiences. The Town and County Club presented both the 2015/16 performances in their space. There was one free showing specifically for 80 youth. The youth came from 7 different organizations all over the Connecticut region. The youth saw the work with their facilitators and took part in a talk back lead by the director. Black Boy Jungle is a social injustice contemporary work about race. The work addresses issues the american dream acquired through both public schooling and our consumer-driven society. The youth saw the work with their facilitators and took part in a talk back lead by the director.   Black Boy Jungle engages the viewers physically, and invites them to think critically about their own identities in terms of ancestry and personal identity. Any presenting or programming establishment would be committed to challenging the audience to seek answers from their immigrant ancestors and to offer libations to society with works of social awareness.   This is work is relevant to any presenting or programming establishment given its exploration of immigration, personhood, trauma, loss, gender, sexuality, and race. The featured music has themes of resistance, pride, strong emotional expression. Audiences across the United States can benefit from exploring these ideas, especially in our age where technology mediates our affect and response to radicalized violence.   The show and the main character are drawn from a classic book by Richard Wright entitled “Black Boy,” with themes and characters derived from the Jamaican film Rockers (1978): race, (im)migration, ancestry, gender, love, desire, urban life. The installation was designed with the aesthetic of a Caribbean Ellis Island. Each Performance is created into the historic melting pot sea port with trunks, baggage, luggage and suitcases stacked in every surrounding corner. The work features eleven altars scapes that co-builds the perimeter of the performance. The eleven altars are filled with earthly elements such as bowls of water, flowers, plants, fruit and candles, representing the material bounty that our land offers. Other atmospheric elements include African textiles, sculptures of deities, Mexican paintings and textiles. Many of these artifacts are of ancestral descent and have been collected and passed down over generations. The surrounding walls are filled with 4, Six foot long paintings created by visual artist Paco WineBox. Each painting depicted the conversations both Paco and the director were having regarding the ideologies behind themselves in the terms of racism. The colorful paintings can change depending on the aspect of the space and conversations after each of the talk backs. Paco Winebox also acts as one of the Immigration Patrollers in the performance.   The installation is a re creation of Ellis Island and has specific seating/entering arrangements that is a part of every performance. In Black Boy Jungle viewers show up with their loved ones, friends, business partners and children. They enter into a holding corridor to then be chosen two by two at random from our immigration patrollers creating the first separation. Once they are chosen they enter through what we call the Process and System installation where they receive an United States immigration service identity card from our “Lady Liberty”. Once they receive their Identity cards “Lady Liberty” then separates the chosen two sending one person left and the other right to be given an assigned seat from our Immigration patrollers.   These identity cards have a new place of origin, new name, a new age, a new gender (male, female, Trans male, Trans female, Two spirit, gender fluid, gender non conforming etc.) and occupation. Each occupation that the audience member receives is completely different, some of the occupations are everyday jobs that people work all over the world meanwhile 25 random audience members are given a specific task to be fulfilled instead of an occupation. The task given are, lighting candles on the altars, helping fold clothes the performers threw all over the stage, re-stacking the trunks and suit cases from the set, leaving a blessing in an offering bowl on the altar, lighting incense and walking around the room, sweeping the floor and “Soul Clapping”. Each task pertains directly to the show and when asked to fulfill the task the audience members all must do exactly so. The audience has to become someone else before watching the performance. They give their identities back at the end of the installation re claiming their own identity   Black Boy Jungle features music from sixties and seventies reggae, dub, and West African influenced musicians such as, Chief Chaker, Freddie McGregor, Lee “Scratch” Perry and Fela Kuti. The music was rearranged, composed and performed by the Ellis Island Band (a live band created specially for this piece) and features original music by songstress Keila Myles. Live music is played during the show by The Ellis Island band which is made up of seven members: Sam King, Travis Golden, Andre Harris, Emily Peterson, Keila Myles, Dwayne Keith and Meg Hourigan who play various instruments like tuba, sousaphone, trumpet, percussion instruments and guitar. Projector Series 1.4 premiered at Real Art Ways in Hartford, CT on January 28th, 2016, followed by performances on the 29th and 31st, all sold-out. The work is a multimedia project that features film, photo, projector art, a hip hop electronica score, and movement from diverse traditions -- ballet, modern, contemporary, b-boying/breakin, gaga, West African, jazz, krump, popping. The piece is driven by the concept of sensory overload, in which our brains and bodies are stimulated through receiving information from multiple sources simultaneously. The projectors around the room transform the physical boundaries of the space: gallery walls become windows and mirrors and vortexes, looking outward at the world beyond, looking inward at the performance. The audience passes through the lens and the digital processing software, the filters and reflectors adds information and removes immediacy. The Projector Series is a manipulation of time and space, disrupting the viewer’s focus and shifting the context of the movements center stage. This culminating installment of the multi-media Projector Series is a standalone piece that synthesizes and consolidates the concepts and forms touched on in the Series from 2011 to 2016, building upon those explorations in a dynamic and critical way dawning the movement installation with constant and consistent current events.   In the Projector Series, the audience is bombarded with images, clips, music, lights and movement. The work engages it’s audience over the idea of viewer responsibility. Should the artist shoulder all the heavy lifting, condensing a vision into a neat and palatable product? The lights and sounds cascade around the audience and performers continuously; resulting in a seemingly infinite game of digital telephone. This piece is fitting for our times politically and socially as it explores ideas of critical thought, media-created leadership and influence, rhetoric, technology, control, sexual energy and dogma.   While creating the projector series the director intentions were to develop a series of events and ideas. When light and sound cascade around the audience relentlessly, and ideas are endlessly repeated, reworked and retransmitted the infinite global game of digital “Telephone” now exist ; when the moving image assaults us from every direction, how do we find the truth? What matters more: the original moment or the sum total of its re-iterations? Those questions were questions that were constantly being examined while creating the piece. Since events often occur, and only we as people can judge the scale of an event using the basis of how much impact it has on us, the series is an ongoing culminating work.   The Projector Series is very relevant for any performance venue. The images along with the movement and sound can always change because of the events that are taking place in the environment of the installation and the modern world. The presenting establishment would be committing to retransmitting how it’s audience judge, weigh and scale the impact. The goals are to create conversations focused around the theme within the performance continuously surveying the audience's role. Lastly If we think of movement as a visual language that is wholly dependent on the contexts of time and space, how can shifting and manipulating that context influence our understanding of that language? Throughout the work the audience will feel the performers awaken a space that has been alive for such a long time. The images depict all aspects of human life juxtaposed with all forms of technology, money, religion vs. spirituality, and drugs.   The Projector Series is a installation built to be seen and felt as a stimulus of sensory overload. The audience is left to question How does humanity withstand its own inventions, the inhumane and obliterating effect of its own technological creation? The shrine shed a light on so many issues that were happening in Lagos West Africa. More importantly it was a way to connect to the people, and hear what they have to say. Sunday night was called Yabis night within that night Fela made it a point to target the political issues within Africa and the world. This Year has been bombarded with a lot of political issues along with world issues. This show prepares you to understand his message as well as what transcending the thought of workwear fashion, American fashion, and African fashion can be. Lagos West Africa is a constant place of exploration, information and dreams. HARDENCO is a high-end workwear manufacturing company dedicated to building the highest quality products for hard workers. Since our founding in 2010, we have matured, our product line has grown, but our operations still remain very small, agile and focused, with only five full-time employees. All our products are made by hand on antique sewing machines in Hartford, Connecticut, a city with a prominent place in America’s rich manufacturing history. Our thread, hardware and most of our denim is made in America. What we build is workwear and we recognize that not all our customers are tradespeople, but we operate as if that were the case.
